Participants of the 1934 Leningrad Masters Tournament.
This is the first known tournament played with BFII chessmen. It followed in the footsteps of Botvinnik's 1933 match with Salo Flohr. Krylenko wanted to test the progress of his efforts to build a cadre of world class players with which to defeat the capitalist countries by bringing in Max Euwe and Hans Kmoch to face a field of the leading Soviet players, including Botvinnik. It served as a prelude to the 1935 Second Moscow International Tournament.
Seated, L to R: Mikhail Yudovich, Hans Kmoch, Grigory Levenfish, Ilya Rabinovich, Grigory Lisitsyn, Max Euwe, Vitaly Chekhover. Standing, Mikhail Yudovich (one of these entries is wrong), Pyotr Romanovsky, ?, Nikolai Riumin, Ilya Kan, Mikhail Botvinnik.
