Today marks 90 years since Viktor Korchnoi's birthday on March 23, 1931.
One of the strongest chess players to never become world champion (he was a candidate on 10 occasions!), Karpov's match nemesis, Korchnoi was one of the brightest personalities in the history of chess.
In addition to all his amazing achievements, Korchnoi is exceptional for his longevity in competitive chess. In 2006, at the age of 75, he won the World Senior Championship. In 2009 and 2011, at 78 and 80, he won the Swiss Championships. In Gibraltar 2011, he beat 18-year-old Caruana, 61 years Korchnoi's junior.
